Company Directories
Directories are especially useful for compiling a list of companies in a particular industry. Use the SIC code index found in the directories described in the Company Research section. An excellent resource for gauging U.S. public and private companies by size, location, and industry. If you are interested, for example, in knowing how Outback Steakhouse compares with its competitors, look up the Outback in the alphabetic index. The index tells you that the Outback is in SIC 58 (eating and drinking establishments). Refer to the SIC section. There you will find that Outback is ranked 30th in the nation in terms of annual sales volume. Also listed will be all the major competing restaurant chains such as Lone Star.Compact Disclosure CD-ROM index. Search by SIC code for a comprehensive list of companies operating in an industry.
