Finding Company
Information in Magazines and Journals
To find articles on your company, you should consult an index. A business periodical index will provide you with a list of articles published on your company. Indexes are available in print and electronically. Every index includes different magazine and journals. Each magazine and journal is covered for different years. Indexes are searched in a variety of ways, so it is imperative that you know how to retrieve the information you need from each of them. Consult the tutorials on an electronic index before using it in order to save time and maximize your research efforts.Magazines
Most indexes do not distinguish between magazines and journals. There are, however, some important differences. Magazines tend to be published more frequently (weekly or monthly) and are more "newsy" in nature. They are generally written to appeal to a diverse audience, from the business practitioner to anyone with an interest in business affairs. You should choose magazines when you need news on your company's latest developments. Popular business magazines include, Business Week, Fortune and Forbes.Journals
At some point you may be asked to find a scholarly or academic journal article on your company. Journals tend to be published on a monthly or quarterly basis. They are generally written for a professional or academic audience and contain in-depth analysis and research. They are frequently published by professional associations and educational institutions. Some journals are peer-reviewed or refereed, which means that a group of recognized experts on the topic at issue have read the article and approved it for their publication. These journals are generally considered to be more authoritative than those whose editor, alone, determines its content. Popular journals include The Journal of the American Management Association, The Harvard Business Review, and American Small Business Journal. If you have trouble differentiating between magazines and journals, ask a librarian for further assistance.
