Q. Why can't I find anything on my industry (specific example--aquarium manufacturing?)
A. May be too specific. Try branching out to larger industry--pets.Q. I know a company exists, yet I can't find any information on it.
A. May be privately owned. This means the company is not required to make information public. See section on: Privately held companies. Another problem that may occur is that a brand name is being confused for a company name. Some brand names, such as Kleenex, are so familiar that they are sometimes mistaken for a company name.Q. The local hardware store down the street has been in business since 1923, yet I can't find it listed in any directory. Why?
A. The same issue of private vs. public ownership applies to this question also. This might be a good time to contact your local public library to see if they have any newspaper clippings on the firm. Also, contact the firm and see if they are willing to send information.Q. I only have two hours before my industry research project is due and I haven't started. What is the quickest way to get this done?
A. Sorry, but industry research is time-consuming. To do a thorough job requires a lot of patience as there will be many sources to track down. Unless your industry is covered in a comprehensive source such as Standard and Poor's Industry Suveys, plan to spend some serious time in the library. Another hint: get started on your project early as often times you will need to send away for information or contact a trade association. No single library or web site will contain all of the information needed to do a good job of researching your industry.
Q. How do I find out what SIC/NAICS code(s) apply to my company?
