Search Tips for Finding Full-text Periodical Articles

OhioLINK is making available more full-text databases to meet researchers' needs. Currently, databases that provide access to selected full-text articles are Matter of Fact, Lexis-Nexis Universe, Social Issues Resources (SIRS), and the PowerPage databases, Periodical Abstracts and ABI/Inform.

Matter of Fact
A good source for statistics, this database contains excerpts from articles focusing on current political, economic, health, and social issues. Excerpts are taken word for word from the original source. While some of the excerpts come from United States federal sources like the Congressional Record, others are from magazines, journals, newspapers, and specialized newsletters. In some cases, the database provides Web links to the article from which the excerpt was taken. To retrieve only excerpts with links to full-text articles, do a word search which includes the phrase web links. Although some institutions may charge for print-outs, users may access these full-text electronic copies of the selected articles free of charge when links are provided.

PowerPages
PowerPages, selected full-text articles that can be requested for 10 cents a page, are currently available through two OhioLINK databases: Periodical Abstracts and ABI/Inform. A good starting point, Periodical Abstracts is a general database with abstracts of articles published since 1986 to the present in a wide variety of popular and academic publications. ABI/Inform, on the other hand, is a subject-specific database indexing and abstracting articles from over 800 business periodicals. Dates of coverage are 1971-present.

Approximately 35% of the articles in these two databases are full-text. PowerPage articles are indicated by the message Full Text Available immediately following the article's citation on an individual record. By following on-screen directions, registered users can request copies of PowerPage articles in their library or from a remote site on campus or from their home computers. Because article delivery varies significantly from institution to intitution, see a librarian for more specific information on this service in your library.

For articles that are not available through PowerPages, select the display holdings feature to see if the journal or magazine is available in your library.

Lexis-Nexis Universe
Lexix-Nexis Universe is an extensive full-text database providing access to current news stories, business & industry information, company financial information, government & political news, country profiles, state profiles, biographical information, reference sources & directories, general medical & health topics, medical abstracts, legal news & analysis, federal case law, the U.S. Code, Constitution, & Court Rules , and state legal research.

Social Issues Resources (SIRS Researcher)
This database provides thousands of FULL-TEXT articles selected from more than 1200 newspapers, magazines, journals and government publications, covering a variety of social, scientific, historic, economic, political and global issues.
