Micro Writing Assignment 3:
Bibliographic Exercises, Analysis, and Research

1. Use the CD-Rom version of the Philosopher's Index in the
KSU main library. (Terminal F.)
2. Use 'Marx' as the keyword for your search.
- search by "words in title" or
- search by KEYWORD or
- search by SUBJECT heading
3. Limit your search to the years 1989-94.
4. Find ONE article generated by your search for which there is an author's
ABSTRACT provided.
5.
- Read the abstract.
- Check the library periodical holdings. Is the journal in which the
article you chose available in the KSU library?
- If the journal is available, GO to the second floor holdings--
either in the CURRENT periodicals or in the BOUND periodicals.
- FIND the journal and article.
6. DO the following once you have found an article available in the Library
holdings for the stipulated years.
PART A.
- PRE-JUDGE: Before reading the article, write
ONE SENTENCE,
based on your reading of the available PI abstract and your reading
of Marx in NCP and the MCP, that asserts what you ANTICIPATE you will
encounter in the article.
- CLOSER ENCOUNTER: READ the FIRST and LAST
paragraphs of the
article. Write two sentences stating your understanding of the
article based on your reading of the two paragraphs.
- MORE DIRECT ENCOUNTER: SELECT the MIDDLE FIVE
paragraphs from
the article. Write a brief ABSTRACT of these five paragraphs. Your
abstract should not exceed five sentences.
PART B.
- Select one issue or theme in the chosen article you recognize
from your reading of Marx. In no more two sentences state how your
understanding of the issue resembles or differs from that supplied
by the article.

- Provide one question you have from your "selective"
reading of the article.
- State one insight you have generated from your "selective"
reading of the article.
- Provide FULL BIBLIOGRAPHIC INFORMATION for the article you have
chosen: Author's name, title of article, journal title, volume, issue,
year of publication, and pages. Also provide the total number of
paragraphs for the article.
