Micro Writing Assignment 5:
An Exercise in Writing a Paper Proposal and Abstract

Professor Deborah Smith

Make sure that you are up to date on the reading for this class. When you are sure that you are, think about what you know concerning Hume's view from the reading up to this point. Focus on some aspect of Hume's view which you find particularly interesting. (If one of the topics on Hume that we will be covering in the next few weeks looks particularly interesting, read ahead on that topic.) Think about this very carefully.

Look over the various types of philosophical papers described in Macro 1. Think about which of these types of paper would be most satisfactory in allowing you to treat the topic in Hume on which you have focused. (Note: this should be a paper on some aspect of Hume's view. Thus, a theory advancing paper is not really appropriate here. Hume himself is not a theory which can be advanced, and to focus on a topic covered by Hume and attempt to write a theory advancing paper concerning that topic would be to focus too little on Hume's view itself.)

In no more than one page which conforms to the guidelines set out for this class, propose a paper topic on Hume for Macro 3 and write an abstract of that paper. Your abstract should include a brief explication of the aspects of Hume's work on whihc you will be focusing, a description of the problem(s) or question(s) concerning that aspect of Hume's work with which you will concern yourself in this paper, and a description of the theses or conclusions you will argue for in your paper. (The arguments themselves do not need to appear in your abstract.) It should be clear from your abstract which type of philosophical paper you will be writing for Macro 3 and what the basic structure of your paper will be.

Due Friday, November 21st.
